9Th Island Loco Moco: Egg Works

*LOCO MOCO

A generous portion of "sticky white rice" topped with a homeade burger patty, delicious brown gravy and two eggs any style.  $9.50

This is one of my favorites I think. Its like a grandma/cafeteria lady from the 60s made this. The gravys just got that cafeteria taste. You can taste the dusty books of an old school and smog from cars that were built back when they were American as fuck. I could see grandma ladling it with a perfectly distributed splat over a deliciously shitty beef patty.

This paddy, however, tasted like the grandmas husband, Buster, cooked them in the fryer in the back! cooked like hes been doing it for years. Dips it in A-1 and licks the drops off his fingers after every dip. This fucking pile of cafeteria slop is everything I want in my Loco Moco.

9Th Island Loco Moco: BITE Breakfast and Lunch

 BITE Breakfast and Lunch

4165 S Grand Canyon Dr #102,

Las Vegas, NV 89147

Bite's Loco Moco

Spanish rice topped with the pork belly burger, two eggs any style, and a brown mushroom gravy. served with toast (wheat, white, rye, sourdough, english muffin or cinnamon raisin toast) $13

The Bite version of this dish is pretty interesting. They took a Spanish approach to it which I initially thought would be pretty cool. In breaking down the key 'gredients, it was lacking in some departments.

The Gravy. I think there was gravy. Now this is more preference but there just wasn't enough for me. I like gravy. I. Like. gravy. I eat gravy everyday.(not true)  It  gives the LM its mushed up dirty juice greatness for everything else to taint with its flavors. Buuuut, that'll probably be a plus if you like it light on the gravy side.

The rice was a tad dry and I feel the dish needed something else Spanish-ish-y to really tie the rice to the rest of it. Meat was a bit dry as well and wasn't as flavorful as most. Made some pretty decent sandwiches with the toast though so it ended well. Not my favorite LM in town but I like that they tried something different. I think a few kinks and they could be on to something.

Rating aside, the atmosphere at this spot is great. The staff is great. Ill be back to try some of their cold press goodness.

9th Island Loco Moco: Bachi Burger

BACHI BURGER

Bachi Burger Loco Moco

470 E Windmill Ln #100, Las Vegas, NV 89123

Grilled Wagyu burger over creamy risotto with two eggs, fried or grilled onions and Sriracha bacon jam. $17

Well, at first glance this thing looked bougie as fuuuck. And well, it is. Its a $17 Loco Moco so, you know, that. It also came out looking pretty slim for a Loco Moco and didnt feel "home-y" enough for me. But when I took that first bite. . . . . ooooooo Jesus, call me bougie but that shit was buuuuhhhdderrrrr!.

The Wagyu beef is so juicy and full of flavor I thought I was gonna orgasm out my face! Great flavor combos for sure but lacked a real gravy which is keeeey in a Gahdamn Loco Moco. A jam is not a gravy. The risotto just made a rich dish even more rich. Since its small to begin with, though, you get just the right amount of bites before its too rich to finish.

So despite its small size, it's a solid full meal and the 17 bucks you dish out are well worth the quality of that juicy, deliciously sexy Wagyu paddy. As far as the "home-y" feeling I like, it still lacked that, obviously.

That beautiful sloppy marriage of egg, rice, ground meat all smothered in GRAAAAVY.  Not neatly put on a plate. Sometimes built from random leftovers your Mom found in the kitchen. And only this "home-y" version satisfies every lust you have for carbs and protein after a shitty (good shit or bad) night. That feeling it did not have.

But if you like stuffing fancy meat in your mouth from pampered farms in Japan, This one is for you. All in all a pretty solid LM.
